Practice expectations
Gear and readiness
- Wrestling shoes, socks, athletic shorts, sweats, singlet, and t-shirt.
- Headgear recommended but not required.
- Trim fingernails. No jewelry on the mat.
- Arrive on time — warmups are part of practice.
Parents at practice
- A parent or guardian stays on site or within 5 minutes of the Field House in case of emergency.
- Club news, weather calls, and practice changes go out on the family Facebook page.
Tournaments and roster
- Tournaments are optional. Practice-only members are welcome.
- The club competes in OKWA Northeast.
- No-shows and missed weight follow the host club and OKWA rules.
- A wrestler must be on the OKWA roster to compete.
Tournament day
- The club posts each tournament and its deadline on Facebook. A host cannot set the deadline later than Wednesday at 11:59 pm. Regional entries close Tuesday at 11:59 pm.
- A wrestler must be on the club OKWA roster before entering, and a birth certificate must be on file.
- Weigh-in is the day of the tournament, in a legal singlet. The wrestler must be at or below the entered weight. An official checks skin and fingernails. Headgear is optional unless a hair net is worn.
- A missed weight or a no-show is a scratch. Regional and state entry fees are not refunded. A regular-season host may waive a fee, including for weather. The club does not promise refunds.
- Novice Championships are for first-year wrestlers only. There is no novice regional and no girls-only novice bracket.
- Open State requires a top-six finish at the Northeast Regional. A girl enters either the girls regional or the open regional, not both.
Novice vs Open
Novice
A Novice wrestler is one who has not yet reached Open.
First-year
A first-year wrestler has not competed in any wrestling tournament in a previous season. First-year wrestlers may enter the Novice Championships.
Open
A wrestler is Open if they have wrestled more than two seasons (a partial season counts as a season), or have placed 1st or 2nd at OKWA State, Girls State, the Novice Championships, or another state or multi-state national tournament.
There is no girls-only Novice Championship.
Age and weight
- Age is determined as of September 1.
- A wrestler must not turn 16 by September 1.
- 15U wrestlers receive a 2 lb allowance beginning January 1.

Hygiene and illness
Wrestling is close contact. Kids sweat on each other, and a skin infection spreads fast. Ringworm, a rash, or any open lesion keeps a wrestler out of the room until a doctor clears it. At a tournament, the official checks skin at weigh-in. A failed check is a scratch, and that entry fee is not refunded.
- Shower after every practice and tournament, before bed. Antibacterial soap is enough.
- Trim fingernails. No white showing.
- Wear clean clothes to practice. Do not wear them again until they are washed.
- Wrestling shoes stay off the street and out of the restroom. Wipe the soles after a tournament.
Stay home with a fever, vomiting, or anything contagious. Close quarters spread it through the room.
Files we keep on each wrestler
- Birth certificate
- OKWA liability waiver
- Club code of conduct
